I created this guide to document how I like to paint the eyes on blood bowl skinks. It favors a stylistic approach rather than a realistic approach, but I feel that it gives these guys a lot of personality. This method is not limited to lizardmen and can be used for a variety of eyes. Note: The colors can be changed depending on the eye color you want. This guide is more about the process used, rather than the colors. Equipment: Rosemary and Co Series 33 Size 0 Brush, and Magnifier Headset.

Skink eye

Citadel  Averland Sunset

Use Black to outline the iris. Try to make the circle pretty clean on this step, since this will be the final shape of the iris. Use Averland Sunset to clean up mistakes.


Vallejo Model Color Black

Mix White with Averland Sunset and glaze towards the bottom of the iris.


White Kimera Kolors

Glaze over the area covered in step 3 with Kimera Cold Yellow.


Kimera Kolors Cold Yellow  

Glaze towards the top of the iris with Kimera Magenta.


Magenta Kimera Kolors

Paint the pupil using black. The lines can be cleaned up later, so don't worry too much if everything isn't perfect.


Mix a little White with Ice Yellow and paint a line on the bottom of the pupil. You can return to previous steps if you need to clean up any mistakes.


Vallejo Model Color Ice Yellow

With a VERY light glaze of Ice Yellow, glaze over the top of the eye, including the area outside the iris. Build this up over 2 or 3 layers and create slightly more opaque areas on the top of the pupil. Also, use this glaze to create any additional spot highlights, like the one I have on the bottom of the pupil.


Put a dot of pure white within the areas defined in step 8.


And that's it! The last picture is included to show what the eye looks like with the surrounding area cleaned up and painted. I also returned to some of the previous steps to fix some things a bit.
